Chikane Himemiya comes from a wealthy family and is just good at everything she starts. Although she is popular with the other students and admired for her talent, she feels quite lonely. Her only friend is Himeko Kurusugawa, but the two keep their friendship a secret since this unassuming girl belongs to a different class at school. When they secretly spend their lunch breaks together, they both forget their everyday lives. As luck would have it, their birthdays are on the same day – and this year, a special event occurs on that day: one day before, a solar eclipse falls over the city of Mahoroba. The godless month has begun, and the seven so-called Orochi are awakened to plunge the world into darkness. Only the two priestesses of the sun and the moon can prevent this – and their reincarnations are Chikane and Himeko. The situation is complicated by the fact that one of the Orochi is the young Souma Oogami, who loves Himeko and always wants to be there for her. So he stands up to the other Orochi and becomes a rival for Chikane, as she also has feelings for Himeko.

Chikane Himemiya kommt aus einer wohlhabenden Familie und ist einfach gut in allem, was sie anfängt. Sie ist zwar beliebt bei den anderen Schülern und wird für ihr Talent bewundert, fühlt sich aber doch recht einsam. Ihre einzige Freundin ist Himeko Kurusugawa, doch da dieses unscheinbare Mädchen an der Schule einem anderen Stand angehört, halten die beiden ihre Freundschaft geheim. Wenn sie heimlich ihre Mittagspausen miteinander verbringen, vergessen beide ihren Alltag. Der Zufall will, dass sie am selben Tag Geburtstag haben – und auf diesen fällt in diesem Jahr ein besonderes Ereignis: Einen Tag zuvor bricht eine Sonnenfinsternis über die Stadt Mahoroba herein. Der gottlose Monat hat begonnen und die sieben sogenannten Orochi werden erweckt, um die Welt ins Dunkel zu stürzen. Einzig die beiden Priesterinnen der Sonne und des Mondes können das verhindern – und deren Wiedergeburten sind Chikane und Himeko. Verkompliziert wird die Situation dadurch, dass einer der Orochi der junge Souma Oogami ist, der Himeko liebt und immer für sie da sein will. Er stellt sich also gegen die anderen Orochi und wird für Chikane zu einem Rivalen, da auch sie Gefühle für Himeko hegt.
